Good Health / Philosophy
When most people are asked what the definition of health is, many will say that health is feeling well, having no pain or disease, or not being actively sick. These descriptions are all part of the process of health, but being truly healthy is much more than being free of symptoms of illness or disease.
A Chinese proverb states "Health is not merely the absence of disease, but a balance of mind & body." The philosophy of this proverb is widely accepted in oriental cultures as the model of health. Balance to life is very important to many cultures, regardless of symptomology. Unfortunately, these beliefs have not been embraced by the Western culture that we live in.
Our society does not have a preventative attitude toward health and wellness. We have been raised to believe that we go to a doctor when we are sick, to get cured. This cure is usually some type of medication that is designed to work with (or against) the body's chemistry to mask the symptoms that you are complaining about. Oftentimes, these medications do nothing to the underlying cause of the illness, they simply treat the symptoms.
Dr. Howard feels that the human body is a remarkable entity. She feels that when someone experiences an "illness" their bodies are expressing the outward symptoms that will help rid the body of the actual cause of the illness. It is important, therefore, to find the underlying cause of the symptoms. By treating and removing the cause and not the symptoms, one can then be healthy.
